About this Event

What can justify the ongoing global processes, stoking parasitic corporate greed, that progressively deprive people of their basic needs?

The system which drives this process must be challenged. Capitalism is an outrageous system, and only the dismantling of its indefensible structures, that enable societal and environmental plunder, will be sufficient.

Date: Thu May 16 2024

Time: 18:30:00 GMT+0100 (British Summer Time)

Location: Central United Reformed Church - The Norfolk Room, Sheffield

Speakers:

Tyrone Scott War on Want

Daisy Pearson Global Justice Now

Dr Andy Higginbottom Kingston University (Retired)

Wealth is extracted from global South communities by multinational companies whose 'corporate power' is facilitated by global North institutions and governments. As the world faces climate catastrophe, the elite intend pumping every last drop of oil, while at the same time grabbing the reins of the transition, so that the rights, freedoms, and dignity of marginalised communities everywhere continue to be sacrificed. We must end this existential corporate power!

The three speakers bring a wealth of experience as campaigners, activists, and academics, who have contact with communities across the Global South and in the UK. We will hear how monopoly power is created, the tricks used to undermine democracy, and the mechanisms by which wealth is extracted and transferred. Discussing how fossil fuel companies work to block public-interest climate action, so they can maximise profit from fossil fuel production around the world, will lead on to looking at ways of building campaigns and actions to end their destruction, and halt the existential threats to people, communities, and the environment, both locally, but particularly in the Global South.

Through presentations and facilitated discussion, this event offers a mix of education, sharing of practical experience, and an opportunity to strengthen our networks.
