About this Event
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month and kicking off Black Public Media’s AfroPop Digital Shorts, join us on May 23rd to for a special screening of the animated documentary short, Inner Wound Real, followed by a Coping & Soothing workshop facilitated by the filmmaker, Carrie Hawks, and licensed creative arts therapist, Britton Williams. In addition to offering a brave space for students/educators, mental health advocates, and interested people to mingle, the event will focus on self-soothing and participants will create the beginnings of a personalized emotional care toolkit that can be used along their healing journey.
Inner Wound Real is a 15 min. animated documentary directed by Emmy-Nominated filmmaker, Carrie Hawks, and tells the story of three BIPOC folk who used to self-injure, but now seek new ways to cope. Each participant’s story has its own distinct visual style. While most media depictions of self-injury focus on able-bodied white cis-women, this project focuses on three individuals: an Indian cismale, a Black transgender non-binary person, and a Fillipina Queer femme.

The venue is on the 1st floor and is ADA Accessible.
Masks required and will be available at the event. Parts of the event will be recorded and photographed. Personal stories will be kept private.
