Copacetic: Soul Sunday

The Soul Sunday Series hosted by Debra James Tucker continues with the talented band Copacetic who has for nearly a decade has been delivering a captivating blend of contemporary jazz infused with soul, gospel, and smooth grooves.
Born from a one-time gig between close friends, the band’s origin was as organic as their sound. That spontaneous collaboration struck a chord — not just among themselves, but with their audience. What started as a casual get-together quickly turned into a movement, one unforgettable performance at a time.
With musical roots steeped in Gospel, Jazz, and Soul, Copacetic crafts a feel-good, soul-stirring sound that resonates with listeners of all walks. Their connection runs deep — you can hear it in the tight interplay, the joyful improvisations, and the unmistakable chemistry that only longtime friends can create. When they take the stage, it’s not just a performance — it’s a vibe. Their name says it all: Copacetic means “all is well,” and that’s the feeling they aim to leave behind every time they play. Whether at an intimate venue or a major event, the band’s mission is clear — to lift spirits, move hearts, and remind everyone that, at least for a while, everything is cool.
Their sophomore album, “Collage,” is a sonic journey — a colorful tapestry of moods and influences. From the upbeat optimism of “Better Days”, to the moody allure of “Exodus”, to the tranquil title track “Collage,” the project reflects the group’s evolution and pays homage to legends like George Duke, Marcus Miller, Norman Brown, and The Yellowjackets. It’s music with meaning — made to inspire, heal, and groove. Copacetic is… Edward Hill (saxophones), Christopher Brown (keyboards) and Derek Brown (guitars), Charles Beacham (bass) and Derrick Kendrick (drums). The unique sound of vocalist Debra James Tucker is a product of extensive training in jazz, classical and gospel music. Her new album is “Voices”, which continues her exploration of early black church forms in contemporary contexts. She is the writer/performer of the one woman show Survival of the Boulevard Singer-winner of an Ohio Arts Council Award for Individual Excellence, has been a visiting instructor at Denison University in the history of African American Gospel Music, and an artist in residence with several youth arts organizations.
