Swampspace presents “Super Cooper,”, an exhibition exclusively featuring alumni from The Cooper Union, a visionary college that redefined higher education in America. These multigenerational, multidisciplinary alumni received an education that was,“ free as air and water”, a term coined by founder Peter Cooper in 1859. We celebrate this radical vision of knowledge and discourse by showcasing work of several local artists who attended this iconic institution. The exhibition will include works on paper, made specifically for the show, which are mailed in by dozens of Cooper Union Alumni from around the world to express their personal connections to each other and with our city. Curated by fellow alumna Lulu Sanchez.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Swampspace is pleased to present “Super Cooper:Alumni Take the Swamp”

an exhibition of alumni from The Cooper Union

Curated by artist Lulu Sanchez.

Looking to this visionary college that redefined higher education in America, and drawing on Swampspace’s 20 year history as an artist-run space in Miami Design District, Sanchez has invited exhibitors from the local creative community and extended their reach through an open call encouraging alumni artists to send work via postal service. This hybrid approach fosters a dialogue between local and international artists, all connected by their shared education at The Cooper Union, and their roots in South Florida.

Championing this radical vision of knowledge and discourse, the exhibition not only embodies a call to action but also serves as a means of exploring the recent and historical connections between The Cooper Union and South Florida. In our conversations Sanchez has reflected on how, from railways to ecological resources, the swamplands of the Florida peninsula and people of the Caribbean have played a role in the story of Cooper Union. Sanchez recounts:

“When Cooper was founded in 1859, Florida had only just become a state. Our birds were poached to decorate the feathered hats of New York socialites attending classes at Cooper, alongside immigrant garment workers. Educated together these women would go on to win the vote and lead conservation movements.” While today we consider the artistic impact of alumni from South Florida, it’s important to remember that it is because of our differences that these networks of influence have fed the resilient creative spirit of Cooper Union.

This idea is evident in the works presented in the exhibition. Staged in a setting reminiscent of a classroom, the exhibition highlights how artist-run spaces and educational institutions create environments that rally people around shared goals and build the architecture for collective engagement, which in turn maintain and foster the pathways that lead the next generation towards their futures in the advancement of science and art.
