Following on from a Heritage Crafts Association * masterclass led by Master Tinsmith Karl Schmidt; this introductory course, led by our amazing Workshop Technician Arthur Scott, will take you through the basics of tinplate working to assemble your very own custom cookie cutter.Working in the Museum of Making Workshop, you will learn a variety of techniques using basic tinsmith’s tools, including cutting, creasing, forming and soldering to shape and assemble the tinplate.
* Tinsmithing is on the Heritage Crafts Association Red List of Critically Endangered Crafts, classed as those that are at serious risk of no longer being practised in the UK.
Who is this course for?
Participants must be at least 16 years old, and those aged 16-17 must be accompanied by a paying adult.
The course is limited to a maximum of ten people to ensure participants are fully supported.
Do I need to bring anything?
All materials, tools, equipment and aprons will be provided. Please wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty and closed-toe shoes.
There will be an hour lunch break. Refreshments and lunch is available to purchase from The River Kitchen at the Museum of Making and we advise that you pre-order your food at the start of the day to avoid waiting. You are also welcome to go to various eateries and shops in the city centre.

Tickets are priced at £45.00 per person. Derby Museums Friends & Members are eligible for 10% discount.

Course booking terms and conditions
Workshop and course bookings can be cancelled and refunded up until two days before the scheduled start date. In the event that Derby Museums needs to cancel a workshop, your ticket will be refunded in full.
