Molly Guptill Manning, who grew up serving ice cream at her family’s famous Guptill’s Arena in Cohoes, is the author of the New York Times bestseller, When Books Went to War: The Stories That Helped Us Win World War II (2014).
USA Today called it, “a tribute to the civilizing influence of books and a careful account of what it took – a lot – to ensure that U.S. fighting men had the right stuff to read.” Her new book is The War of Words: How America's GI Journalists Battled Censorship and Propaganda to Help Win World War II (2023). Manning graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UAlbany, earning both a BA (2001) and MA (2002) in History.
