An intensive contact improvisation weekend: study, practice, exploration, and dancing, dancing, dancing!Karl Frost and Julija Melnik will meet to share with you their essential approach in dancing and teaching contact improvisation. We are sure that it will be complimentary, surprising, enriching.
On Saturday evening we will meet at the performance ambiance, that is part of contact improvisation culture. Karl and Julija will share a contact improvisation duet dance exploration, together with workshop participants discovering the fruit of the training of that day –
“physical Poetics” in contact improvisation. For conclusion – a Jam session, that will allow us to enjoy simple pleasure of moving & dancing together. And on Sunday – one more day of inspiring & poetic investigations!
Karl Frost has been dancing and teaching contact improvisation and related explorations since the 1980s in California, and is known internationally for the clarity of his teaching work and for the experience-expanding nature of his work in both practice and performance. He directs performance work through Body Research Physical Theater, rooted in somatic psychology and often highly audience interactive. He is also a research scientist, currently working as an anthropologist and the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany. www.bodyresearch.org
Karls’ proposition: Contact Improvisation as Physical Poetics.
Contact improvisation is a play of bodies moving and mutually adapting through physical contact. Using the metaphor of “poetry”, we look at elements of this mechanical and sensory relationship as we would words in a poem. We play with identifying foci of attention and creative play like “pressure”, “quality of touch”, “support and resistance”, “lead/follow/yield”, “skin/muscle/bone”. We then get more specific with how we pursue these foci, giving ourselves micro-scores to canalize our dances into novel explorations.
Julija Melnik traveled the world to learn different dance and movement techniques, she has a master’s degree in educology science and 20 years experience in dance pedagogy, from hip-hop dance to argentine tango, from improvisation to sacred movements & dances. She studied CI with many international level teachers, including CI pioneers in the USA. Since 2006 Julija has been developing and teaching contact improvisation in Baltic and other countries.
The particularity of her approach is lightness and depth. She is Samara Yoga, Lou Yong Tao To Qi and Tango Zen instructor, specialist in Gurdjieff dances, energetic and transgenerational techniques, meditation and healthy and vegetarian cuisine.
Julija‘s proposition : CI as Art of Staying Connected
We will study and practice some essential principles, that will allow us to enter into a mutually satisfying dance. By working on physical technique, we will also train our attention and cultivate the quality of relationship with others and things. Thus contact improvisation can become an Art of Staying Connected, that allows us to maintain the contact in the dance with another, the continuity, fluidity and harmony of the movement. It is a wonderful instrument to experience what happens at the moment of contact, to approach the reality through touch and to engage into the path towards joy and freedom!
