Thursday evenings // April 4 - May 2 6:15 - 8:30 pm & Saturday May 4 6:15 - 10:30 pm
Contact Improvisation (CI) - a partner dance blending the physical principles of touch, momentum, shared weight, and maintaining a shared point of contact - is akin to a fusion of acro-yoga and dance improvisation. This practice offers endless opportunities for making choices, listening, sharing, and showing generosity, and welcomes anyone seeking to enhance their somatic awareness through touch. We are first respectful and reverent to the body in it's capacity for healing ourselves and others. You can bring the body you have, injuries and all. Ari Christopher will guide participants through the CI essentials, such as falling, safety, counterbalance, lifting using minimal effort, centering techniques, and responsiveness.
This series is limited to just 8 participants, fostering a close-knit environment where trust and familiarity grow with each session. As we progress through our weeks together, you'll not only develop your skills but also form meaningful connections with fellow dancers.
A vibrant indoor/outdoor extended jam is included on May 4 (6:15-10:30 pm) to celebrates the culmination of our 6-week journey and is open to the broader dance community. This final evening features a short class followed by an extended jam. As the jam continues, you may choose to commun around the potluck or relax in the hot tub, sharing food and stories. This closing event, included in your registration, wraps up our session with dance, relaxation, and community bonding. Session registration is for ALL 6 sessions.
** IMPORTANT ** Space is limited and fills quickly. Pre-register to hold your spot at the ticket link: https://forms.gle/MGd4kap5dYxbRFkq8

MORE ABOUT CI: Contact Improvisation was founded in 1972 by Steve Paxton. Integrating his background as a modern dancer and his studies in the martial art form Aikido, Steve developed Contact Improv through explorations with his students and colleagues at the time. It's an intuitive practice that develops community awareness and allows participants to push against their own limitations without words or promises, judgment or competition.
MORE ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Ari Christopher brings a wealth of experience to Contact Improv, with over 500 hours in teaching, performance, and practice. Her passion for CI ignited at the EarthDance July 4th 10-day jam in 2011. Since then, she has refined her skills through practice with the Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Company, Pilobolus, Critical Mass CI@50 Conference, and several Texas Dance Improvisation Festivals. Ari has shared the stage in CI performances with notable artists like Brandon Steffensen (MFA), Julie Mulvihill (Ph.D.), and TuMM dancers. Her teaching expertise extends to a wide array of students, including Tulsa Ballet CDE Trainees, yoga festival attendees, and meditation practitioners.
