CONSORTIUM AURORA BOREALIS CONCERT - HUNGARIAN STRINGS
Consortium Aurora Borealis presents stunning chamber music for strings by Hungary's chief composers of the early 1900s performed by three top Thunder Bay musicians including versatile Katie Stevens Assistant Concertmaster of the TBSO who recently wowed everyone with her jazz violin playing in the Martin Blanchet Jazz Quintet Café Paris concert. She shines in the classical music world and will be joined by our long-time violist Patrick Horn and charismatic cellist Peter Cosbey. The program introduces some musical gems which otherwise would not be heard in town.
Zoltán Kodály’s short Intermezzo for string trio is a relaxed serenade in late-Romantic style sounding “rather like Dvořák with a slight Hungarian accent” as it includes the influences of Hungarian folk tunes. It is followed by his passionate unaccompanied cello sonata eminently suited to the performing style of our solo cellist with its virtuosic elements. This is the first significant solo cello work written after Bach’s six monumental cello suites. Its final movement draws on Hungarian folk music in keeping with our theme.
Next come seven miniature Béla Bartók duos for violin and viola written as didactic works for students. They also lean on Hungarian folk tunes but Bartók transformed the original melodies. These lead into Ernö Dohnányi’s tour-de-force Serenade for string trio which rounds off the evening. It was regarded as one of his very best works despite being written at the age of 25 and was composed in the Romantic idiom.
This promises to be an outstanding concert! Come out to enjoy a fulfilling performance of live music! You may even be a winner in our draw for two tickets to the TBSO‘s “Melody and Magic” concert of April 4 7:30 PM at Hilldale Lutheran Church a $100 value.
