Considering Matthew Shepard
Craig Hella Johnson’s 'Considering Matthew Shepard' is a three-part fusion oratorio influenced by the 1998 murder of a young gay man in Wyoming. With a fresh and bold voice, Johnson seamlessly weaves together a variety of music styles to create a compelling and moving musical experience. The work is set to a range of poetic and soulful texts by poets including Hildegard of Bingen, Lesléa Newman, Michael Dennis Browne, and Rumi. Passages from Matt’s personal journal, interviews and writings from his parents Judy and Dennis Shepard, newspaper reports, and additional texts by Johnson and Browne are poignantly appointed throughout the work.

“’Considering Matthew Shepard’ demonstrates music’s capacity to encompass, transform and transcend tragedy. Powerfully cathartic, it leads us from horror and grief to a higher understanding of the human condition, enabling us to endure.” — The Washington Post

25 years after his murder, how can Matt’s story transform the way that we see, know, and love one another—our neighbors, families, and strangers? Join us at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas on October 21, 2023, at 5:00 pm as we learn how Matt’s life, tragic death, and legacy can shepherd us towards compassion and gratitude. The work will be performed by the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas Chancel Choir. This performance is the first time 'Considering Matthew Shepard' has been performed in DFW since its Dallas debut by Conspirare in 2018.
