Connecting Threads – A History of Albany Woollen Mills Exhibition 🧵📅 Wednesday 4 February to 28 March 2026
Step into one of Albany’s most significant industrial stories, marking 101 years since the opening of Western Australia’s first and only woollen mill. Alongside the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company, the Albany Woollen Mills was a cornerstone of the town’s working life. The Mill employed hundreds of people and shaped the rhythm of the community for much of the 20th century, leaving an enduring imprint on Albany’s social, industrial and cultural fabric.
This special exhibition draws from the remarkable private collection of Albany-based maker and researcher Sally Pell, whose archive of Albany Woollen Mills blankets, memorabilia and creative works reveals the deeply personal stories woven into these iconic textiles. Blankets that warmed homes, travelled in car boots for decades, or marked weddings, milestones and working lives become vessels of memory and connection.
Alongside the exhibition, visitors are invited to share their own recollections and memories, inviting Albany to help shape how its story is remembered, and contribute to a growing community archive that will inform a forthcoming book with UWA Press.
Blending history, art, and collective memory, Connecting Threads acknowledges the Albany Woollen Mills as a cornerstone of the town’s industrial identity, celebrating a legacy woven not only from wool, but from people, place, and shared history.
On display Wednesday 4 February to 28 March 2026, gallery open 9:00am to 5:00pm daily.
