For more than 2000 years artists from all over the world have been using different techniques in papercutting — a form of cross cultural convergent evolution with few equivalents. These are the histories and relationships Connecting Cuts will explore during its exhibit running November 7-December 14th at the Olive Hyde Gallery in Fremont California.
Envisioned by Vietnamese-American papercut artist and Guest Curator Bianca Levan along with Olive Hyde Art Gallery Curator Leah Andrews Connecting Cuts showcases the deep and sometimes surprising connections formed between cultures and generations as the papercutting artform is perpetually rediscovered by artists seeking to simultaneously explore their cultural roots and forge their own individual form of self-expression.
Presenting works from local as well as international artists Connecting Cuts is a one-of-a-kind exhibition which has Levan and Andrews presenting traditional folks styles like Jianzhi Papel Picado Scherenschnitte and Wayang alongside more contemporary works to link techniques and identify the stylistic similarities and departures.
