How do we use ChatGPT and other AI to create a fairer future for all?

How can data from the past shape our future?

Join the Jean Golding Institute and the University of the West of England to Connect, Collaborate, Create with Data and AI. Join the conversation with engaging scientists and local representatives to discover how communities could use data and AI like ChatGPT to tackle key issues including inclusivity, protecting the vulnerable, and climate change.

Hear about the latest advances in Data Science, Data-intensive research, and Artificial Intelligence, with a diverse mix of inspiring speakers and interactive displays.

About the Panel Members
Thomas Appleby (He/Him)

Dr Thomas Appleby is a non-practising solicitor who has worked in various aspects of commercial law for nearly 25 years. He is an Associate Professor at UWE in the College of Arts, Technology and Environment, where he has specialised in the regulation of commons. He has undertaken various consultancy and research tasks in the digital space ranging from advising government on legal issues associated with the use of technology in criminal enforcement to researching issues associated with the use of others’ data. His research approach to the novel use of commons is that there is generally more law around than people realise and that it is the application of the law rather than the law itself, which is often ignored. This approach is particularly applicable to technology companies where there is a “fake it till you make it” culture. Dr Appleby has used this approach to lead two impact case studies on behalf of the university, where his research has been applied in the real world predominantly to marine management (another poorly understood commons). Dr Appleby is also Chief of Legal Affairs for ocean conservation charity, the Blue Marine Foundation, where he works regularly with marine users, policy makers, and regulators at the national, European and international level.

Kate Robson Brown (She/Her)

Kate became Director of the Jean Golding Institute in August 2017 and leads the team in providing a strategic direction for the Institute. She is Professor of Biological Anthropology and affiliated to both the School of Arts and the School of Civil, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol. Kate joined the University of Bristol in 1997, following her first degree in Archaeology and Anthropology. She obtained a PhD in phylogenetics at the University of Cambridge (Newnham College, 1995), and held the Graham Robertson Research Fellowship at Downing College. Kate is also the Alan Turing Institute University Lead for Bristol and is also chair of the Institute's Research and Innovation Advisory Committee, which steers scientific direction at the Turing.

Kate’s research focuses on how the hard tissues of the human body hold a signature of life history. She explores the microstructure of bone, dentition and soft tissues; innovating methodologies for the data capture, analysis and interpretation of material characterisation to address a range of challenges posed by anthropological, biomechanical, forensic, developmental and evolutionary applications.

Darren Jones MP (He/Him)

Darren Jones MP is the Labour Member of Parliament for Bristol North West and the Chair of the House of Commons Business and Trade Committee. He sits on the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy and the Liaison Committee, which scrutinises the work of the Prime Minister. A solicitor by training, Darren is recognised as a leading voice on technology policy and founded the Interparliamentary Forum on Emerging Technologies, which brings legislators from around the world together. Darren sat on the Online Safety Bill Committee and is the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Technology (PICTFor), Data Poverty and National Security and Technology.

Joyann Boyce (She/Her)

As an award-winning entrepreneur, international conference speaker, and advocate for diversity and inclusion, Joyann is dedicated to creating solutions that improve representation and authenticity within the marketing industry.

Mark Woods (He/Him)

Dr. Mark Woods is the Chief Strategy Officer, Executive Director and Head of the Robotics and Autonomy Group at CFMS specialising in applications which enable autonomous exploration, survey, modelling or analysis of complex environments.

With a PhD. in AI and Machine Learning He has over 20 years’ experience as an innovator leading, researching, developing and commercialising Robotics, Autonomy, Computer Vision and AI (Machine Learning and Symbolic) Applications from low to fully operational (industrialised) Technology Readiness Levels.

He has been the autonomy lead for a wide range of European Space Agency (ESA), EC, UK and commercially funded projects including key autonomy elements of ESA’s ExoMars Rover which will be Europe’s first surface mission on Mars.
