About this Event

TARGET AUDIENCE

Members of Ethics Committees, Ethics Champions/Liaisons, students, clinical trainees with interest in ethics.

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW/PURPOSE

The Twin Cities Clinical Ethics Symposium, will provide ethics education to healthcare professionals from around the metro. This one-day, in-person event will feature professional clinical ethicists from local health systems leading sessions on topics ranging from the everyday—such as challenges with discharge planning and disagreements over goals of care—to the cutting edge—such as normothermic regional perfusion and emerging uses of artificial intelligence. Material will be presented using a variety of modalities, including didactic, panel, debate, and small group discussion. The symposium will offer participants the opportunity to learn more about:

  • the history of clinical ethics in the Twin Cities
  • local healthcare organizational responses to requests for “futile” care
  • strategies for addressing selective refusals of treatment
  • death and emerging techniques for organ procurement
  • ethically informed approaches to suboptimal discharges
  • future developments in the field

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe historical context of clinical ethics collaborations across the Twin Cities.
  2. Compare and contrast local healthcare organizational responses to interventions of disputed efficacy.
  3. Employ strategies for addressing selective refusals of treatment generated by mistrust in the healthcare system.
  4. Defend an ethical position on controversies related to definitions of death and emerging techniques for organ procurement.
  5. Outline two ethically informed approaches to suboptimal discharges from acute care.
  6. Discuss likely future developments and tensions in clinical ethics related to trustworthiness in the healthcare system.
