Le documentaire hybride associe la genèse du roman « Les Confessions de Félix Krull » à l'histoire de la vie de Thomas Mann. Le film met en lumière les parallèles entre le charmant escroc Felix Krull et son créateur, qui luttait lui-même contre les contradictions de sa vie. En mélangeant des images d'archives, des scènes de jeu et des passages de journaux intimes et de romans - lus par Thomas Mann lui-même - le film explore le double monde de l'auteur et la signification personnelle du « sous-ton homosexuel » (Erika Mann) de son œuvre. Entre Lübeck, Lisbonne et Hollywood se déroule l'histoire de la fuite de Mann devant le national-socialisme et de son retour en Europe.
