Join us in the lead up to America's 250th Anniversary to learn about young Col. George Washington and the era of the French and Indian War and beyond in American Colonies. In 1754, Washington’s first military experience arose when he led an expedition of Virginia Provincials into what is now Western Pennsylvania. This action carried out on behalf of Lt. Gov. Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia sparked a global conflict now known as the Seven Year’s War. Washington’s experiences there taught him hard lessons that helped transform this inexperienced officer into the man that led the Continental Army to victory at Yorktown in 1781 and served as the First President of the United States. This conference presents a wide array of topics that examine not only Washington and his role in the war and its battles and campaigns but delves into the war’s background and its global nature. The seminar explores elements of the war’s material culture and examines aspects of Native American participation. It further follows Washington into the interwar years and their impact on him as a leader as well discussion on Lord Dunmore’s War.
