Our evening lecture series is ready to start! Next Thursday, as part of the 'City and Micro-region in the Ancient Mediterranean (and Beyond)' conference, Prof. D.Phil. John Ma (New York) will kick off the lecture series with a contribution on 'On Micro-regionalism'.
The lecture will consider micro-regions in general – a concept empirically defined and fruitfully applied by many practitioners in the fields of ancient history and archaeology. Beyond this concept, the lecture will also propose to think about micro-regionalism, defined as three things: the existence and definition of micro-regions; the theoretical and methodological apparatus necessary to study such micro-regions; and, finally, the conviction that working on the remote past at this scale is worthwhile and profitable for the study of ancient societies, economies, and political relations.
The danger might be that micro-regionalism serves as an alibi for 'business as before', serving as a new label for the comforts of classical topography or local history. Instead, the contribution is going to ask what micro-regionalism allows us to avoid and what it allows us to gain by examining a series of propositions on 'micro-regionalism and...' – globalization, connectivity, power – to think about the ways in which micro-regional complexities are political.
