About this Event
For Romans, wine was the democratic drink - everyone had it in some form or another. Be transported to ancient Rome and the Empire she created while enjoying a tasting through some of Italy's most iconic and historic wines. The Banquet was a key part of aristocratic Roman culture and the wines will be matched with authentic ancient Roman dishes to create a light meal. (Togas optional!). Carlene Wilson, wine educator and archaeology and ancient history expert, will take you through the stories which connect these wines to their traditional terroir and to the people who built straight roads, viaducts that still function today and provided a ‘vomitorium' at their parties to facilitate greater excesses. These contradictions will come together as you learn more about each wine and how it contributed to a legacy that still impacts us today. By the end of the evening you'll know your garum from your conditum and have tasted some of the history and also the modern brilliance of Italian varieties
