________
Tuim Nova Era
Tuim Nova Era is leader of the Huni Kuin village of Espelho da Vida located within the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. Having began his career as an agroforestry agent, he is one of the primary individuals responsible for the rescue and revival of the culture of the Huni Kuin people since the year 2000.
When he began his studies in Rio Branco with the Climate Policy Institute, he had the opportunity to travel and meet indigenous people of various ethnicities. It is then that he realized that the Huni Kuin people were losing touch with their customs and traditions.
He thus began the work of rescuing the knowledge still held by Huni Kuin elders, such as the medicinal use of rapé; the healing nixi pae ceremony with its traditional sacred chants; the Muka dieta; the application of jenipapo body paint; and dance of the Katxanawa (ritual of abundance and fertility). He then introduced the novelty of combining guitar with their traditional chants, being one of the first to bring the Huni Kuin Pasha Dume prayer to instrument.
Since then, Tuim has continued to perform ceremonies with the medicines of the forest and considers himself an eternal apprentice of the healing plants and sacred chants of his people. He is the creator of the Hiwea Kiri Keisiti Center and organizer of the Vivencia (Residence) Yuxibu Nuku Shushawai.
_______
Yeke Kaya
Yeke, daughter of Tuim Nova Era, is one of the most gifted female apprentices of the medicine tradition of the Huni Kuin people. She has been studying the traditional medicines and plant dietas of the Huni Kuin people from a young age.
_______
Yube Huni Kuin
Yube Huni Kuin is the brother of Chief Tuim Nova Era. As a member of Txana Shukuabu, he has worked extensively with Paje Tume (the feminine political & spiritual leader of all of the Huni Kuin villages of the Humaita River) in guiding medicine ceremonies as a talented musician and dedicated apprentice to the healing traditions of the Huni Kuin people.
________
Abraham Lozanobrioso
Abraham received a vision almost 20 years ago, in which an indigenous elder blew medicine into his nose with a pipe and said to him: “You too are a child of the forest.” In this vision, he then found himself falling and becoming submerged in a pot filled with dark brown liquid. He knew next to nothing about the medicines of the forest at that time, but participated in ceremonies with Santo Daime before re-locating to the Amazon Rainforest.
He has been a “child of the forest” ever since, living and studying with maestros and pajés of medicine traditions throughout the Amazon region including the Shipibo-Conibo, the Huni Kuin, the Yawanawa, and the Ashaninka. He has also studied the medicine and healing traditions of the Huichol, the Lakota, and the Mazateca people.
He is gifted with remarkable clarity of sight and the grace of the cura (healing), able to visually see and balance the body, mind and spirit of the participants in ceremony.
