Un grand début de nouvelle saison avec trois œuvres surprenantes pour petits ensembles.
Troquer son violon contre un livre magique et la promesse d’une grande richesse – voilà une proposition qui mérite réflexion. Mais gare à qui pactise avec le diable ! Avec Histoire du soldat, Igor Stravinsky a écrit une pièce radiophonique pour théâtre ambulant empreinte de noirceur. Accompagnés d’un dessinateur, sept solistes de la Monnaie et un narrateur se frottent au langage musical radicalement nouveau adopté par le compositeur pour cette sombre parabole. Airs folkloriques russes, tango et ragtime – une nouveauté à l’époque ! – ne sont que quelques-uns des styles que Stravinsky s’approprie pour mettre ce récit en musique.
Arnold Schönberg, dont on fête cette année le 150e anniversaire, a lui aussi repoussé les limites artistiques de son époque. Sa Kammersymphonie Nr.1 délaisse les sonorités orchestrales opulentes, parfois même pompeuses, prisées par le romantisme tardif depuis les drames musicaux de Richard Wagner.
Le maître de Bayreuth affectionnait pourtant le caractère intime d’un effectif orchestral plus restreint. Dans Siegfried-Idyll, il associe des motifs tirés de l’opéra du même nom, une berceuse allemande et quelques fragments d’un quatuor à cordes inachevé pour former un tendre cadeau d’anniversaire à Cosima, sa jeune épouse. Wagner souhaitait garder la partition privée, mais finit par la vendre à son éditeur quelques années plus tard en raison de difficultés financières. Un pacte avec le diable ou un cadeau du ciel pour l’histoire de la musique de chambre ?

Je viool ruilen voor een magisch boek en de belofte van grote rijkdom: dat lijkt het overwegen waard. Behalve wanneer je zo’n deal met de duivel sluit... Igor Stravinsky schreef zijn Histoire du soldat als een duister hoorspel voor een rondreizend theater. Zeven Muntsolisten en een verteller wagen zich, met een tekenaar aan hun zijde, aan de radicaal nieuwe muziektaal die hij voor deze dreigende parabel opriep. Russische volksdeuntjes, tango en de toen pasgeboren ragtime: het is maar een greep uit de stijlen die Stravinsky naar zijn hand zette om zijn vertelling vorm te geven.
Ook Arnold Schönberg, wiens 150ste verjaardag dit jaar op de kalender staat, verlegde de artistieke grenzen van zijn tijd. In zijn Eerste Kamersymfonie keert hij de rug naar de weelderige, soms overdadige orkestklank die de laatromantiek zo lief was sinds Richard Wagner zijn muziekdrama’s op de wereld losliet.
Toch kon ook de meester van Bayreuth de intimiteit van een kleiner symfonisch ensemble waarderen. In zijn Siegfried-Idyll brengt hij motieven uit de gelijknamige opera, een Duits slaapliedje en fragmenten uit een nooit voltooid strijkkwartet samen tot een teder verjaardagscadeau voor zijn kersverse vrouw Cosima. Wagner wilde de partituur graag privé houden, maar uit geldnood verkocht hij ze enkele jaren later alsnog aan zijn uitgever. Een duivels pact, of een hemels geschenk voor de geschiedenis van de kamermuziek?

The new concert season opens with three surprising works for smaller ensembles.
Trading your violin for a magic book and the promise of great wealth: that seems worth considering, no? Except, of course, if it is with the devil that you are making such a pact … With Histoire du soldat, Igor Stravinsky wrote a somber radio play for a touring theatre. Seven La Monnaie soloists and a narrator will venture, along with a cartoonist, into the radically new musical idiom conjured up for this dark parable. Russian folk tunes, tango and the then emerging ragtime: these are just some of the styles the composer used to shape his musical narrative.
Arnold Schoenberg, whose 150th birthday is on the calendar this year, also pushed the artistic boundaries of his time. In his Chamber Symphony No. 1, he turned his back on the lush, sometimes extravagant orchestral sound so dear to late Romanticism after Richard Wagner had unleashed his musical dramas on the world. Yet even the master of Bayreuth could appreciate the intimacy of a smaller symphonic ensemble. In his Siegfried-Idyll, he brings together motifs from the opera of the same name, a German lullaby and fragments from a never-completed string quartet into a tender birthday present for his brand-new wife Cosima. Wagner was keen to keep the score private, but after a number of years, pressed for money, he sold it to his publisher. A devil’s pact? Perhaps rather a gift from above to the history of chamber music.
