Discover an exceptional young cellist and a key figure in the history of music. In his recital with pianist Marco Sanna, Benjamin Kruithof plunges you into the musical world of Nadia Boulanger. A child prodigy, instrumentalist, conductor, composer and teacher, the Frenchwoman is famous for having trained a host of legendary musicians including Copland, Quincy Jones, Philip Glass and Daniel Barenboim. Here, her Three Pieces for Cello and Piano rub shoulders with works by her master and friend Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky, whose musical modernity she championed, and Astor Piazzola, whom she encouraged to rediscover his musical nature, the Argentine tango. Also on the programme: the Belgian premiere of a new work by British composer Sally Beamish, written especially for Benjamin Kruithof.

Partez à la découverte d’un jeune violoncelliste exceptionnel et d’une figure incontournable de l’histoire de la musique. Lors de son récital en compagnie du pianiste Marco Sanna, Benjamin Kruithof vous plonge dans l’univers musical de Nadia Boulanger. Enfant prodige, instrumentiste, cheffe d’orchestre, compositrice, pédagogue, la Française est restée célèbre pour avoir formé une pléiade de musiciens légendaires tels que Aaron Copland, Quincy Jones, Philip Glass ou encore Daniel Barenboim. Ses Trois Pièces pour violoncelle et piano côtoient ici des œuvres de son maître et ami Gabriel Fauré, d’Igor Stravinsky, dont elle défendit la modernité musicale, et enfin d’Astor Piazzola, qu’elle encouragea à renouer avec sa nature musicale, le tango argentin. Au programme également : la création belge d’une nouvelle œuvre de la compositrice britannique Sally Beamish, écrite spécialement pour Benjamin Kruithof.

Dit jonge Franse kwartet, verkozen tot ECHO Rising Stars, neemt je mee op een reis door drie verschillende tijdperken. Het humoristische kwartet La plaisanterie van Joseph Haydn, verbaast met zijn glissandi en zijn meervoudige eindes, genoeg om classicisten het hoofd op hol te brengen. Daarna brengt het Agate Quartet de Belgische première van een gloednieuw werk van de Oekraïense componiste Anna Korsun. Akoestische en elektronische instrumenten schitteren naast stem en geluidsobjecten. Net als Haydn is de Oostenrijker Wolfgang Erich Korngold een vertegenwoordiger van de muzikale postromantiek. Zijn Derde Strijkkwartet markeert de terugkeer van de componist naar meer 'serieuze' muziek, na zijn successen in Hollywood.
Rising Stars is een project van de European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO). Het Agate Quartet is genomineerd door het Konzerthaus Dortmund, de Kölner Philharmonie en de Philharmonie de Paris.
