Back by popular demand, NSK Ikigai Enhance presents Jenny Walker and Kathryn Mayo - "Comprehensive Implant Supportive Management".
This event offers an exclusive opportunity to explore the principles of managing and supporting patients throughout their implant journey from a dental hygiene perspective. Jenny Walker Dip DH/DT and Kathryn Mayo Dip DH FAETC work clinically at peri-implant disease referral centres in the North West, they present around the UK and teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. the latest in our series of NSK Ikigai ‘Live’ Events. This event offers an exclusive opportunity to explore the principles of managing and supporting patients throughout their implant journey from a dental hygiene perspective. Jenny and Kathryn work clinically at peri-implant disease referral centres in the North West, they present around the UK and teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
This ‘Live’ event combines a full day of lectures and hands-on sessions.

Timetable:
9.00 – 9.15 Registration and introductions
9.15 – 10.45 Peri-Implant and Periodontal Tissue Differences/Classification and Assessment including practical implant assessment and probing technique.
10.45 Break
11.00 – 11.30 Risk Factors – Identifying modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors/ indicators which need be considered for long term peri-implant health. How we as therapists/hygienists may help manage these risk factors.
11.30 – 13.00 Monitoring “The Three R’s” - discussing periodontal preparation pre implant placement, exploring the evidence base for recall and radiographic frequency in relation to implant supportive care along with robust record keeping.
13.00 Lunch
14.00 – 15.45 Instrumentation and treatment of Peri-Implant Diseases - Discussion surrounding the theory of instrument selection dependant on diagnosis. Looking at the techniques involved when using different instruments on implants theoretically and practically.
15.45 Break
16.00 – 16.45 Case Based Discussion – presentation of cases with the opportunity to devise and discuss treatment plans in a group setting using the knowledge gained throughout the day.

Title : Comprehensive Implant Supportive Management
Aim: To be able to assess, manage and support patients pre and post implant treatment
Objectives:
- Discuss the anatomical differences between implants and natural teeth and be able to classify peri-implant health and disease.
- Discuss the common risk factors for implant disease.
- Heighten awareness of the basic principles of peri-implant disease management and how to implement a practice protocol.
- Discuss the importance of pre-implant assessment including periodontal status and how this may effect supportive therapy recall.
Outcomes :
- Use evidence based protocols to set recall and radiograph frequency for post implant supportive care.
- Will have gained practical experience of performing an implant.

Bios
Jenny Walker is a dental therapist who qualified from the University of Leeds in 2015. She works in both NHS and private practice. Jenny currently works in a peri-implant disease referral practice in the Northwest. This has led to her developing a keen interest in the management of peri implant diseases and given her the opportunity to speak Nationally on the subject to fellow dental professionals.
Alongside a colleague, Jenny has helped devise and deliver courses for Hygienists and Therapists on the management of implant patients, she also lectures to the MSc dental implantology students and the NEBDN dental implant nurses.
Jenny was the Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist Early Career Group Representative for The British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry for 2019/2020. During her time on the committee, she played an active role in the workshops that took place in 2020 for the BSP's modification of the S3 Treatment Guidelines for Periodontitis.
Alongside her clinical and lecturing role, Jenny has co-written and published several journal articles relating to peri-implant disease and periodontitis.
Kathryn Mayo is the resident hygienist at ICE where she combines her private clinic with tutoring.
Kathryn qualified from Leeds Dental Institute in 1993. Five years later whilst studying for the Further Adult Education Teaching Certificate (FAETC) at Salford College, she secured a post at Leeds, teaching on the Diploma in Dental Hygiene course. Alongside this, Kathryn has worked in NHS, private and specialist periodontal practices since qualifying and has developed a special interest in implant supportive care and treatment of peri-implant diseases. She has worked with Professor Cemal Ucer for over 15 years and supervised the Greater Manchester School for DCP’s, on an implant supportive care clinic at ICE (until the schools closure last year).
More recently, she has started to lecture for the MSc in Dental Implantology and the Maintaining & Treating Peri-Implant Tissues course. The latter was devise, written and is delivered by Kathryn, and Jenny Walker under the supervision of Professor Simon Wright.
Along with Jenny, Kathryn has presented around the UK. Kathryn has written articles published in BSP’s PERIOdical, BSDHT’s Dental Health and Implant today magazine where she co-wrote an article on ‘a team approach to implant supportive care in general practice’ with Jenny Walker and past president of BSP Prof. Nicola West.
Both Jenny and Kathryn were involved in the recent BSP S3 clinical practice guidelines stage IV.
