Compline on the Twelfth day of Christmas.A special program with The Four Tenors and Matthew round out our chanted celebration of Christmas.
Sunday January 5th, 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church 202 High Street Nevada City 95959.
Compline is the 7th and final short chanted prayer service at the completion of the Monastic Day; essentially a good night to God. Ours is an updated, harmonized version.
The program begins with Kevin Siegfried’s haunting Phos hilaron (O gracious light) in mystical 5-part harmony. The Compline hymn is Te lucis ante terminum (To you before the close of day) by the famous English composer Thomas Tallis. Psalm 84 is one of Peter Hallock’s best settings for men’s voices. Nunc dimittis is also in a 5-part setting by another famous English composer, William Byrd. The big tune, and a tour de force is “Hodie Christus natus est” in 5-parts by J.P. Sweelinck.
We are lucky to have some of the most talented and polished Tenors (and Matthew singing Bass) we can put together for Compline and we hope you can end your Christmas season with us, as the next day starts the Epiphany. The large candle array will be glowing; the men will chant unseen from the choir loft in our darkened 1873 Sanctuary.
