Description:
The foundation of any vibrant democracy is a system of fair and free elections. But what happens when those contests become fiercely competitive... or uncompetitive ? Are competitive elections "good" for democracy? In this conversation, we will examine evidence regarding both the positive and negative side effects of competitive elections. If on balance we determine they are "good," what can we do to increase the number of competitive elections in our communities?
Speaker Bio:
Heather K. Evans is the John Morton Beaty Professor of Political Science at The University of Virginia's College at Wise. Her primary research interests are political engagement, competitive congressional elections, social media (Twitter) and the effect of entertainment media on political attitudes. She is the author and editor of three books about competitive elections and community engagement. Her fourth book (with Jennifer Hayes Clark) titled "Chicks Who Tweet: Gender and Congressional Communication on Twitter," will be published by the University of Michigan Press in 2026. Heather also serves as the director of "Beyond Wise," the Experiential Learning HUB at UVA Wise, and the director of Graduate Studies.
