The award-winning Company Dance Traverse will present “Winter Dances” on Friday, December 19th & Saturday, December 20th at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. at Milliken Auditorium in the Dennos Museum Center. "Winter Dances" is a repertory concert featuring work by international choreographers Andy Pellick, Suzi Taylor, Nick Young and Maddy Falconer, along with DAA/CDT Faculty Tya Harrison, Competition Director, and Laurie Murphy, Carley Klebba, Maria Curiale, Justin Koertgen, Pam McCormick, Roxanne Blumerick, Holly Provenzano, Madison Vomastek, Ellie LaPointe and more. “We are thrilled to have these professional artists choreograph for our company and train our dancers to perform so beautifully”, said Artistic Director Betsy Carr. Audiences will love the fast paced, inspiring, and versatile pieces danced by CDT dancers ages 8-18 from throughout Northern Michigan. Dance Arts Academy’s Junior, Teen & Senior Fusion Companies will also perform.
The concert features our CDT Seniors in their last CDT Concert. Samantha Dykstra, Eden Mroczkowski and Kathryn Wonacott have been stand out CDT dancers for many years. “Their leadership, positivity and support has been outstanding, we are all looking forward to celebrating them in this milestone” said Artistic Director Carr. They will perform a new trio “Come Alive” choreographed for them by CDT Alum and Professional Dancer Ellie LaPointe, as well as their Senior Solos choreographed by Falconer, CDT Alum Liberty Smith (currently dancing on scholarship at Chapman University in Los Angeles), and NYC Artist Suzi Taylor who choreographed Kathryn’s solo. “They have been an incredible part of our school for the past several years, and we can’t wait to see them in their final CDT Concert performance” said DAA Co-Owner Sue Buck.
We’re looking forward to premiering many of our new competition pieces for this season and are thrilled with the variety and quality of work we are presenting this year. “We are so excited to attend NYCDA Nationals in Florida this summer and have been working hard on our pieces to share with everyone in Traverse City”, said Senior dancer Kathryn Wonacott.
In addition to LaPointe and Smith, other talented CDT Alumni have also contributed wonderful choreography to our Show. Maddy Falconer BA from the prestigious USC Kaufmann School of Dance in Los Angeles choreographed a beautiful piece for our 1st & 2nd Company. “Echo Vale” premiered at the Northern Michigan Dance Festival and Falconer also choreographed several solos premiering at “Winter Dances". Maddy is the youngest person to earn the prestigious “Outstanding Choreographer” Honor @ the Youth America Grand Prix. In addition CDT Alum & current professional dancer Madison Vomastek (Dancing in Europe with the Royal Ballet of Flanders) and Chloe Erwin (Currently dancing on a Full Ride Scholarship at The University of Michigan) have also contributed stunning solos to this concert. “It is wonderful to have our alumni come home and give back so much to our current dancers,” said Co-Owner Sue Buck.
Dance Arts Academy’s Junior, Teen and Senior Fusion Companies will also perform in each concert. “Winter Dances” is filled with talented young artists that have so much love for this beautiful art form” said Carr. “I know audiences of all ages will be inspired by their performances.”
For the 1st time our "Winter Dances" Saturday Performances have sold out. We have added an additional show on Friday 12/19, 7:00 pm, and this performance still has tickets ($22 each) available. We are anticipating all shows will sell out. As always, thank you for the support of our Company Dance Traverse and Dance Arts Academy Dancers.
