About this Event
Tour the adaptive reuse project of a long vacant historic industrial site on Milwaukee's near northside. “One of the most substantial affordable housing developments in city and state history. The complex of buildings, the oldest of which dates back to 1906, was originally built for Briggs & Stratton.” (Urban Milwaukee) Hear from the developer, the architect, and the contractor as they share the challenges and means by which they were overcome. Experience firsthand the successes that were achieved.
Learning objectives:
- Comprehend the process to achieve support of all and varied political and community stakeholders for this project.
- Examine the challenges to fit the program into the nine existing buildings of varied size and configuration and maintain a design continuity.
- Recognize the ways in which various supplemental financing strategies were assembled to make this historic preservation and affordable housing project viable.
- Identify the complications of, and the approaches to resolve, unforeseen conditions and maintaining historic integrity of existing, antiquated structural systems.
