Sweat Lodges and the purification ceremonies held within them have been part of ancestral ceremonies for thousands of years. Although mostly known from Native American tribes, Sweat lodges are found in (amongst other) Nordic, African, Celtic, Siberian, Roman and Peruvian historical and spiritual practice. These ancient teachings and methods have been passed down by our forefathers so we can experience, heal, and purify in the way of our ancestors. Not just for ourselves but for the world around us. Partaking in a “sweat” is a deep, powerful and transformative practice that can bring about genuine emotional cleansing.
What is a community sweat lodge?
Logistically the lodge itself is traditionally made from supple branches arched into a dome shape. This is covered with skins or blankets, creating a low tent-like space. A small pit is dug into the centre of the structure and participants sit around the centre.
Hot stones are brought into the lodge, before the door is closed, creating a near pitch-black environment. Water is poured over the rocks during the ceremony to create warmth and steam. The lodge is run over a series of rounds, in between each round the door is opened and water is passed around.
Beyond those simple logistics lies one of the most powerful ceremonies I have had the honour to experience and learn. The connections, cleansing rituals and healing ceremonies associated with the lodge have the genuine power to be transformative to both yourself and the world around you.
Is it right for me? What does the day entail?
We run our sweat lodges as a traditional spiritual ceremony and treat it with the respect that it deserves. That said, there is often laughter and joviality. We are all human, and for us the best healing tool is smiles, laughter and community. Expect some seriousness, tied in with genuine real connections, open-heartedness, honesty, healing and the opportunity to learn from the teachings of both our ancestors and the world around us.
All of our workshops, ceremonies and events have you at the heart of them. So whether you have experienced Shamanic practice or a sweat lodge before, or have never taken part in a spiritual ceremony, this can be an immensely powerful, transformative and enjoyable experience.
All we ask is you attend with an open mind, to engage throughout the day, and have the willingness to listen and talk from the heart.
About the day :
A sweat lodge ceremony is so much more than just the lodge itself. We will spend some time in circle, getting to know each other as a tribe, learn the ceremony of the sweat lodge and preparing through techniques such as guided meditation.
We will create the fire and dress the lodge as a tribe. Whilst the fire heats the rocks, there will be time for some personal reflection and meditation, before coming back together for the sweat lodge itself.
The time in the lodge varies but expect to be in the sweat lodge for at least an hour (over several rounds). After the lodge there is a shared feast, where we have the opportunity to talk freely, give thanks for the teachings given, laugh, make new friends and generally enjoy the energies of the experience.
Our sweat lodges are clothed lodges, most people choose to wear light dresses, swimwear or shorts. (there is more information on this in the joining instructions)
If you are unsure of anything or want to hear more, please do message us to discuss.
Sweat Lodges are considered a medicinal ceremony, and as such out of respect to our teachers and linage,
we do not charge a ticket price. Rather we ask for a donation towards the costs and time of our support team. Please reserve a space, so we can keep you informed, send you joining instructions and insure we have enough space for all who need it.
we are often asked what an advisable donation is, to be clear, this can be whatever you can afford,
however, we estimate £40pp covers the venue hire and materials.
