About City Surf Project:
City Surf Project was founded in 2014 by former high school educator, Johnny Irwin, and local paramedic, Hunter Chiles. As a teacher, Johnny had introduced several of his students to the beach on a surfing field trip. Most of the students had never been to the ocean and were deeply affected by the experience of being in the water and riding waves. This inspired Johnny to transform his teaching skills from the classroom to the ocean, and the City Surf Project was born.
CSP works to provide Bay Area youth: equitable access to the ocean, fosters a connection to nature, and improves their health and well being, through surfing. Using surfing as a vehicle, CSP engages young people to respect nature, form healthy habits, and find personal growth.
