Participate in the power of art, community and creativity by joining artist Molly Carter for a series of hands-on workshops in the creation of a large-scale community quilt.
In these workshops we will explore the history and cultural impact of quilt-making while simultaneously celebrating the ethnic and cultural diversity of our city. Participants will learn and practice basic sewing skills, fabric piecing, hand stitching, and applique while experimenting with color, pattern and composition. Upon completion of the workshops, each participant will have created a small “quilt block” using a variety of fabric and sewing techniques. All completed quilt blocks will be joined together creating a large-scale quilt reflecting our culturally and ethnically diverse communities. The community quilt will be displayed in public spaces for all to enjoy!
Workshops are free. Prior sewing experience is helpful but not required. Workshops are for adults, youths, and families.* Pre-registration requested.
RECOMMENDED:
Sign up for at least two workshops to allow for enough time to make your quilt block. Workshops are designed for adults and teens ages 15+. *Children age 14 and younger are encouraged to participate but should come with an adult or as a family.
MATERIALS:
Sewing materials and a variety of colorful fabrics are provided. You are welcome to bring your own fabric, that has personal significance or that reflects your ethnic heritage, to incorporate into your quilt block. Please keep in mind that fabrics should be cotton for consistency and ease of sewing. If you have your own sewing kit, you are welcome to bring it.
