About this Event

Join Cemvo Scotland, Govanhill Baths and Glasgow Climate Action Hub to learn how you can participate in reducing waste and working towards circular economy as an individual and a community.

This event will focus on community led circular economy. Participants will learn some practical skills in clothes mending, learn about Govanhill Baths work towards local circular economy, and a limited number of participants will have the option of participating in a Community Organising workshop (separate booking is available for this workshop). This event is a collaboration between Govanhill Baths’ Rags to Riches programme, Scottish Wildlife Trust, and Cemvo Scotland’s Ethnic Minorities Environmental Network’s programme.

Clothes mending workshop with Eva Camille Harrold, Area Coordinator of Govanhill Baths

11:00 – 13:00

The event will kickstart with a clothes mending workshop where participants will learn how to fix clothes at home without using a machine. You can bring along a couple of clothes with you that need mending, or if currently you don’t have any, you will receive fabric to learn the techniques on.

Fast fashion: affordability vs environment, talk by Siu-Linn Victoria Chung

13:00 – 13:20

Participants will attend a short talk about the complexities of fast fashion and how the production of affordable garments cause serious harm to the environment.

Lunchbreak 13:00 – 14:00

Guided tour of Govanhill Baths’ community recycling facilities

14:00 – 14:30

Govanhill Baths doesn’t only mend clothes and save fabrics from the landfill but also recycles plastic and timber. During this guided tour, participants will see how this organisation created a small-scale circular economy project within the community by reducing waste and creating various items, such as benches and tables for community use.

Community organising workshop by Gill Hatcher, Engagement Manager of Scottish Wildlife Trust

15:00 – 17:00

Govanhill Baths’ projects wouldn’t be as successful as they are if they haven’t worked closely with the community. In this interactive workshop we’ll cover the basics of what ‘community organising’ means, and how it can be used to benefit both people and the environment. We’ll look at some success stories from around Scotland and start to think about how community organising could be applied in your own communities and projects. This workshop has limited spaces. Please, book separately.
