"Native American Archeology in South Carolina" by anthropological archeologist and professor, Christopher Judge, will be a community lecture held on Thursday, November 20 @ 5:30 pm in the reception hall coinciding with the open reception for the "Native: American Art & Heritage" exhibition on view in the main gallery. This lecture will present archaeological data on Native American cultures since the last Ice Age. From the coast to the mountains, archaeological evidence abounds in our state. The lecture will look at the sites and artifacts that tell the history of the state’s Indigenous peoples prior to the arrival of Europeans.

Biography: Christopher Judge has been studying Native Americans in South Carolina for over 40 years. The lens that informs his research is the anthropological archaeology of precontact Native American cultures. Additionally, he has conducted oral history type research in living Native American communities throughout South Carolina. From 1996 - 2016, along with his colleagues Carl Steen and Sean G. Taylor, he ran a long-term initiative known as the Johannes Kolb Archaeological and Education Project. He has served as the President of the Archaeological Society of South Carolina and the Council of South Carolina Professional Archaeologists (COSCAPA). He also currently chairs the Native American Liaison Committee of the COSCAPA and is a member of the COSCAPA membership committee. He served several terms on the Society for American Archaeology’s Public Education Committee and is a member of Native American Advisory Committee, South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs and a past member of the Southeastern Archaeological Conferences’ Native American Liaison Committee. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Anthropology from USC Columbia and he currently serves as the Assistant Director of the Native American Studies Center at USC Lancaster. While at USCL NASC, he has led fundraising of four endowed funds, NASC Fund, W. Brent Burgin Archives Fund, W. Brent Burgin Lunch and Learn Fund, and the Fred “Henry” Shute Archaeology Lab Fund which total $140,000. ​
