About this Event
Join GCVS, Community Land Scotland, and Small99 for a session on community growing and the carbon market.
The majority of climate action is to do with emissions reduction. Absorbing carbon from the atmosphere can be helpful, but it is not a straightforward fix. This event will provide a background on the carbon sequestration market in Scotland and show what community groups can do that provides the most benefit to their communities and the planet.
Adam Bastock from Small99 will discuss the dangers of relying on carbon offsetting, and some of the community benefits that climate action has instead. Localising action can provide many benefits to people and the environment, beyond carbon absorbed such as food production, protection from extreme weather and engaging people on other carbon reduction actions.
Dr Josh Doble from Community Land Scotland will discuss the carbon market and how it affects the needs and goals of Scottish land reform and wider land use patterns. Sequestration is part of many states’ and companies’ plans to reach ‘net zero’, but there are potentially fraught issues around this practice. Dr Doble will cover what carbon credits are and their effect on land use in Scotland.
