About this Event
Literature is Liberating, in collaboration with the Benjamin L. Hooks Library and the University of Memphis Department of Journalism, invites you to the inaugural event in our Community Griot Series: Quilting Liberation—an evening of storytelling, history, and hands-on creativity.
Our featured griot, Susan Rogers, is an acclaimed quilt artist and storyteller whose work honors the deep legacy of African American quiltmaking. She will lead us through an exploration of quilting as an act of preservation, resistance, and community—tracing its roots from ancestral traditions to contemporary artistry.
Following Susan’s talk, she will demonstrate how to create a quilt patch, sharing techniques and symbolism embedded in the craft. Attendees will then have the opportunity to create their own patches in a guided workshop, stitching their own stories into fabric.
As part of our collaboration with the Benjamin L. Hooks Library, this series will also be digitally archived, ensuring these stories live on for future generations.
Come ready to listen, learn, and create as we piece together a rich history of resilience and artistry.
