About this Event
Join us at Paradise Parking Plots Community Garden on Saturday, Oct 19th from 9am-12pm to help prepare our garden for winter!
Now that the growing season has ended, our garden plots are ready to be prepped for the winter. We need your help to amend our soil with healthy compost and plant protective winter cover crop in our 50 growing beds. These actions will prevent winter erosion of our soil, capture nutrients for next season, and ensure we're set up for a productive 2024 harvest!
As an official Orca Recovery Day Event, we will also be sharing more about how our site and our collective action supports the health of our Puget Sound ecosystem.
Tasks:
- Add wheelbarrows of compost to garden plots
- Spread winter cover crop seed mix and rake into the soil
- Remove invasive blackberry and other weeds from restoration areas
Other Details:
- Youth under the age of 15 must be supervised by a parent or guardian
- This event will happen rain or shine, so please dress appropriately with closed toed shoes/boots, layers for the weather, clothes that can get dirty.
- Please bring a refillable water bottle - we will have a cooler available onsite
- Washed gardening gloves will be provided; however, please bring your own if possible.
Paradise Parking Plots Community Garden is a project of World Relief Western Washington. In 2017, we began transforming an underused parking lot into a thriving garden with 50 growing beds, raingardens, a bioswale, and food forest. It is a place where refugees, immigrants and local community members can gather to grow culturally-appropriate foods that promote a healthier lifestyle, improve food access, foster economic independence, and build community. Thank you for your help in continuing to build and improve our shared space!
