This is one gathering my kids and I always come back to and we are happy to share it with the community. This is a Cross Community Event for POC Homeschoolers of Oakland (https://www.facebook.com/groups/POChomeschoolers/) and the East Bay Self-Directed Education. This community garden is tucked away on Maybelle Avenue like an oasis amongst the neighborhood. You won't see it until you walk down the entry way to the parking lot of the apartment complex it belongs to. This garden has chickens, composting, a hugelkultur and various things growing all year long. It has been managed by homeschooling mamas for about 4 or more years. It is currently managed by Marria Evbuoma.
The vibe - It's definitely an Self-Directed Education space. Kiddos and adults are welcome to garden or tend to chickens in whatever way they like or not at all. It's a great space to have lunch at and watch the kiddos play - and they all have a great time.
The catch - There is no toilet! We only spend a few hours there so it has never been a problem for my kiddos. Advice for mamas - make it a slow hydration day (Or if you can't hold it you can #1 in the back by the big tree).
