About this Event

Join us for a pivotal Community Dialogue on Drug Prevention, hosted by the Responsible Drug Learning Association. This event aims to bring together scholars, policymakers, health professionals, and citizens to discuss and share insights on effective drug prevention strategies and their impact on our community.

Event Highlights:

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Kevin Sabet, PHD, MSc

Author, consultant, former advisor to three U.S. presidential administrations, and Yale University affiliate, Kevin A. Sabet, Ph.D., has researched and implemented drug policy for more than 25 years. In 2011 he stepped down as senior advisor in President Obama's drug policy office, having been the only drug policy staffer to have ever served as a political appointee in a Democrat and Republican administration. He has been featured in nearly every major media publication and news channel on drug policy and has published two books. His third book, One Nation Under The Influence, analyzes US and Canadian drug policy and will be published in 2025 by Polity. One of his books is being adapted into a documentary film by a major Hollywood studio. 

He is the co-founder, with former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy, and President of the Foundation for Drug Policy Solutions. He holds a Doctorate and Masters of Science degree from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar, and a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. 

Keynote Speaker: Julian Somers, PhD, MSc

Dr. Julian Somers is a licensed clinical psychologist and specialist in addiction. He is a Distinguished SFU Professor. His career in clinical practice and research spans 37 years and includes innovations in harm reduction and recovery across the lifespan.

Dr. Somers has designed and led major initiatives addressing addiction in urban, rural, and remote communities and among high risk populations including youth, people experiencing homelessness, and people who are involved with courts and corrections.

Dr. Somers works to improve clinical practices and public policies related to addiction and mental health. The Somers Research Group is internationally recognized for initiatives involving large-scale randomized trials, multi-site interventions, and population-level studies described in over 150 publications. Dr. Somers has also created advanced information systems for public health surveillance and to evaluate the effectiveness of policies and services.

Members of the Somers Research Group have earned local, national, and international awards for research in the public interest. In 2018 Dr. Somers received SFU's award for Excellence in Supervision in engineering, medical and natural sciences.

Richmond City Councilor - Alexa Loo

Alexa Loo is a passionate and dedicated city Councilor serving the Richmond community. With a strong background in both public service and athletics, Alexa brings a unique perspective to her role. She is known for her commitment to fostering community engagement, enhancing public safety, and promoting sustainable development. 

Alexa’s journey to public service is inspiring. As an accomplished athlete, she represented Canada in snowboarding at two Winter Olympic Games. This experience instilled in her a deep sense of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance—qualities she now brings to her work on the council. 

Elected in 2014, Alexa has worked tirelessly to address the needs and concerns of Richmond residents. She is a vocal advocate for improved infrastructure, affordable housing, and environmental stewardship. Her efforts have led to significant advancements in city planning and community initiatives. 

Alexa Loo’s dedication to Richmond is evident in her active participation in local events and her accessibility to constituents. She believes in the power of collaboration and is committed to creating a vibrant and inclusive city for all.
