Feature performance:

[ _____ ] Mirage Performance of Sonic CompositionPercussionists Drew Lang and Roland Muzquiz perform the graphic music notation designed by the artists Sara Dittrich and SV Randall, accompanying the video installation in the Crow’s New Media Gallery. Using the marimba and other percussive effect instruments, this experimental music score interprets visual and environmental data collected by the artists across areas of the Tularosa Basin in the southwestern United States—geographies historically associated with extreme atmospheric phenomena. Following the performance will be a Q&A with the artists.Drew Lang has commissioned and premiered works for marimba in solo, chamber and concerto settings. He is a member of the Dallas Opera Orchestra, principal mallet player with the Dallas Wind Symphony and percussionist for Casa Mañana Musicals and Broadway Dallas. Lang is on the percussion faculties at Southern Methodist University and runs MARIMBA MADNESS summer percussion camp.Roland Muzquiz is Percussion Director for Richardson High School. Along with this position, Mr. Muzquiz also serves as Principal Percussionist with the Dallas Wind Symphony and the East Texas Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Dallas Opera, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Plano Symphony Orchestra, the Richardson Symphony Orchestra, Texas Chamber Orchestra, Ft. Worth-Dallas Ballet, Ballet Arlington, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Texas Wind Symphony, The Turtle Creek Chorale, and the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra.Sara Dittrich is a Baltimore-based interdisciplinary artist. Her artworks include sculpture, prints, video, and interactive installations with biometric sensors, and data-driven performance. Often informed by residencies and travel, such projects have included time-lapse imaging of landscapes, local skies and tidal patterns, and the somatic effects of time and a place on the body. Dittrich’s work has been exhibited with venues such as the Baltimore Museum of Art, The Sculpture Center (Cleveland, OH), and DiverseWorks (Houston, TX).SV Randall is an interdisciplinary artist, working with sculpture, installation, painting, and performance. Randall addresses the various ways in which objects mutate in nature and function across time. His work has been exhibited at venues such as David & Schweitzer Contemporary (Brooklyn, NY), the Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery (Purchase, NY), and the Villa Romana Palazzi di Casignana (Italy). He is currently an Assistant Professor of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Texas at Dallas.
