This meeting will focus on the Peel Green Active Travel Scheme and the proposed reduction of lanes on the A57 near Peel Green/Eccles from 3 lanes to 2.Do you remember the chaos caused by the one-lane trial in 2024? Tailbacks of 45 minutes, emergency services unable to get through, and complete disruption for local residents and businesses? This issue hasn’t gone away – the council are still pushing ahead with this proposal behind the scenes.
The council have repeatedly stated that they have consulted the community and that everyone has had an opportunity to raise concerns. Many residents know this isn’t the case – large areas of Irlam and Cadishead never received leaflets, door knocks, or direct updates, and many questions remain unanswered.
It is always powerful to turn up in numbers. Even if you’ve signed the petition or submitted concerns online, physical presence at the meeting is the most impactful way to show the council the strength of our community voice. Our communities have shown before, in campaigns like Ashley Road, that when we turn up in numbers, the council notices – meetings have even been cancelled because so many people came!
We need as many residents and local businesses as possible to attend this next Community Committee meeting to make sure our voices are heard.
A quick note on my involvement, I live in Higher Irlam and first got involved after seeing the petition and attending the January Community Committee meeting. I’ve emailed the project team with my questions and can share their responses. Having been stuck in the trial traffic, I know what this will do—just look at the chaos on Deansgate!
