The Anthropologists is hosting a Community Action Workshop (CAW) in partnership with The Doula Project on Wednesday, June 14 from 6:30-8 PM. CAW’s are 90 minute interactive in-person gatherings that bring together community members, stakeholders and artists for a theatrical brainstorming session.
This workshop will focus on the unique skills and care that doulas offer, along with the challenges they face, and how birthing people can access reproductive care. Our goals are to build knowledge, strengthen advocacy and provide an energizing, restorative experience. This workshop is free; advance registration is required.
Location: Lower Manhattan (exact address provided upon registration)
These workshops are specifically designed to:
- Create a supportive, affirming space in which to engage with a local issue, concern or chosen theme.
- Envision alternative outcomes to a given scenario or reality and engage in collaborative problem solving or visioning.
- Mutual learning and knowledge-sharing.
- Unite people in an energizing and constructive way.
- Promote civic engagement and action.
Participants will have the opportunity to participate in the following ways:
- Engage in conversation through brainstorming and storytelling
- Expression through creative writing and expressive movement
- Improvisation techniques to explore alternative methods of communication.
- Solo work and small group collaboration
SPACE NOTES:
- As this is a dance studio, shoes are prohibited in the space.
- As of February 2023, Covid vaccinations are not required; masks are recommended. First-time visitors will be asked to sign in via Gibney’s App.

Childcare: available (limited spots) Childcare for children ages 2 and older will be provided onsite, in the same space as the workshop. Our provider is CPR and First Aid certified. Spots are limited and must be reserved at [email protected] by Monday, June 12. Children younger than 2 may attend but we ask that they stay with their parent.
Attendees are invited to participate to whatever degree they feel comfortable, as generative participants or active observers. We welcome self-led interpretations of assignments that are inclusive for all bodies and experience levels. The Anthropologists ensure skilled facilitators, and a safe and respectful space, with systems in place for harm prevention and reduction.
ABOUT THE ANTHROPOLOGISTS
The Anthropologists is dedicated to the collaborative creation of investigative theatre that inspires action. Fusing research, expressive movement, and rigorous dramaturgy, we create dynamic plays rooted in social inquiry. We are currently devising a new play rooted in the history and embodied wisdom of doulas and midwives, and the traditional knowledge held in the Black birth worker community. The play will be devised from an array of research materials; first hand accounts, medical textbooks, ethnological research, and primary sources. A work-in-process presentation will be held on Friday, June 30 at the 14th St. Y.
