For staff associated with South West Regional Cancer Centre.

The Victorian Department of Health has partnered with the Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare (OCPH) at Deakin University to deliver Conversations Matter Skilled Conversations Building Excellence in Cancer Care to make this training opportunity possible.

About the workshop

Core skills in effective communication are the foundation for establishing trust, discussing patient concerns, responding to emotions and making effective referrals.

This hands-on workshop introduces key skills, tools and communication strategies for supportive care screening, cancer survivorship and challenging conversations.

Workshop Learning Objectives

During this workshop you will:

  • Develop an understanding of the core communication skills for effective interactions such as building rapport, establishing trust, responding to emotions and forming collaborative partnerships with patients.
  • Use effective questioning to identify and prioritise patient concerns, involving patients in decision-making processes, including referrals to additional supports.
  • Participate in experiential learning to observe and analyse healthcare conversations, practise new skills and contribute to group learning and feedback.

Facilitator

Meg Chiswell is a healthcare communication expert and Director from Deakin University’s Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare.

Who should attend?

All health professionals working in regional cancer centres who want to improve their skills in handling communication challenges with patients, families and colleagues.
