The Virginia Chorale presents Commonwealth Connection, a celebration of music by Virginia composers, including the world premiere of The Neighboring Village from widely acclaimed composer and Virginia Beach native Gregory Spears. The Neighboring Village was commissioned by the Virginia Chorale in celebration of its 40th anniversary season (2023-2024).
Gregory Spears has written music for The New York Philharmonic, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Santa Fe Opera, and choral ensembles Seraphic Fire, The Crossing, and New York Polyphony. His compositions have been called "astonishingly beautiful" by The New York Times, and "coolly entrancing" by The New Yorker.
Also on the program is music by Mason Bates, Thea Musgrave, Judith Shatin, Undine Smith Moore and Randall Thompson. Pianist Brandon Eldredge joins the Chorale for Mr. Thompson’s Ode to the Virginian Voyage, which was commissioned in honor of Jamestown’s 350th anniversary. Virginia Chorale artistic director Charles Woodward will conduct.
Founded forty years ago, the Virginia Chorale has grown from a community-based early music chorus to today's dynamic group of professional singers, performing repertoire ranging from the Middle Ages to the music of today. Commonwealth Connection is the fourth and final program in our 2023-2024 subscription series.
