🎭 COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE – A Day of Masks, Mayhem and Mastery! (Oh My!)Step into the colourful, chaotic and wildly funny world of Commedia dell’arte — the original form of improvised comedy! This full-day workshop immerses students in bold characters, exaggerated movement, fast-paced improvisation and the joy of spontaneous performance.
Across the day, students will:
✨ Discover “What is Commedia dell’arte?”
Learn the origins of this 16th-century Italian theatre style and explore its influence on modern comedy, masked performance, clowning and physical theatre.
🎭 Meet the Stock Characters
Explore iconic characters like Arlecchino, Pantalone, Il Dottore, Columbina and Il Capitano. Students experiment with character movement, physicality, voice, rhythm, walk cycles, energy levels and status.
📚 Create Their Own Scenarios
Learn the art of building simple improvised story structures — the backbone of Commedia! Students will create quick, dynamic scenarios ready for performance.
🤣 Play with Lazzi
Use classic Commedia “lazzi” — comedic gags, physical bits, mishaps and interruptions — and create new ones of their own.
🎬 Perform!
The day finishes with short, improvised Commedia performances showcasing the characters, scenarios and lazzi developed throughout the workshop.
