The wines of Spain and Portugal have increasingly grabbed the attention of the wine world in recent years. There is certainly a lot more to Portugal than Port! From the home of port in the Douro Valley, where there are some of the best value reds Europe has to offer, to the intriguing white wines of the cool north-west, and of course, we mustn’t forget Ribetajo, Alentejo and the Algarve where wines are often interesting and complex.
For many years the red wine of Rioja has ruled the roost of the Spanish wine scene, but the wines of Ribera del Duero are certainly nipping at its neighbour’s heals with some rich and meaty wines – and let’s not forget the Spanish white wines, such as fragrant Alberiño from Galicia with its peachy soft juiciness.
Let the showdown commence!
