Since time immemorial, the Tribes of the Columbia Plateau (Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Confederated Tribes of Umatilla, Yakama and Nez Perce) utilized shell, stone, bone and natural paint to ornament their wares. When glass beads were introduced through the trading process, the new material was transformed by the hands of Tribal artists into iconic imagery which adorns clothing, regalia and everyday objects. Students will work on a beautiful medallion while learning the history of beading in the Columbia Plateau. Instruction will include a demonstration of the following processes: choosing a design, preparing the foundation, beading techniques with two needle applique, and finishing techniques with a one needle 3-bead edge. While most students will not finish their piece within the 2-day workshop, Brigette will provide enough information on how to complete the beaded medallion at home!
All Native Arts classes are offered at 50% off tuition for all peoples of North American indigenous descent. Please email [email protected] for details.
Open to beginners, but ideal for those with some beading experience. Open to students 16 & up.
