As a physics and engineering graduate turned medical technology entrepreneur, I will be sharing three innovation stories in interventional cardiology in this talk. The first two stories are about how we exploited advancements in material sciences and the systematic engineering of hardware and algorithms to advance minimally invasive physiology (fractional flow reserve, or FFR) and imaging (intravascular ultrasound, or IVUS) devices to better guide precision coronary intervention. The third one is about how a biophysics principle (electroporation) was introduced in clinical electrophysiology, and became a revolutionary technology in the ablation treatment of atrial fibrillation and other cardiac arrhythmias.
Rather than focusing on technical details, I will share how a deep understanding of unmet clinical needs, combined with mastery of problem-solving skills from physics and engineering, can power innovations in interventional cardiology, make a significant positive impact on patients, and translate into strong market competitiveness in the medical technology industry.
