In 1851 Frederick Scott Archer invented Wet Collodion photography, but unlike Henry Fox Talbot twelve years earlier he did not impose copyright on the process. This fostered a proliferation of new studios including one that was right next door to Contingent Works, at 75 High Street, Bromley, run by Robert Vine Harman. There were a number of other local establishments offering portraits, with some specialising in equestrian photography.
As part of the SE.E NE.W Histories programme made possible by the Heritage Fund, community interest company Fitzrovia Noir is offering free creative learning sessions in image making inspired by the age of discovery 1790-1920. ‘SE’ in the project title denotes Bromley as one of the compass points in this national initiative emanating from Fitzrovia Noir’s studio on the Thames at Trinity Buoy Wharf, where the Trust are also supporting this three year programme.
‘NE’ denotes northeast England where Joseph Swan devised dry plates and introduced tonality into photography through his bromide printing process. He pioneered the first incandescent lightbulb in 1878, later partnering with Thomas Edison. He also invented synthetic silk while living in Bromley between 1883 and 1894.
Collodion specialist Jonathan Turner will be setting up a temporary studio and darkroom at Contingent Works on Sunday 23rd June, offering the chance to take part and be given a free portrait session.
