About this Event
The Museum of Graffiti’s Private Gallery proudly invites you to an exclusive evening with Niels Shoe Meulman, the visionary artist behind the revolutionary writing style known as Calligraffiti. Originating from classical calligraphy and infused with the raw energy of graffiti, Calligraffiti bridges tradition and street culture in a bold, contemporary form. As Niels himself states, “A word is an image and writing is a painting.” His work challenges the boundaries between text and art, transforming language into powerful visual expression.
In the graffiti world, Niels is recognized as a true pioneer. Under the name Shoe, his iconic tags appeared throughout New York City in the 1980s alongside legendary artists such as Dondi White, Rammellzee, and Keith Haring. What began as a street-driven practice evolved into a groundbreaking gallery career.
Today, Meulman’s work spans traditional paint-on-canvas, conceptual installations, and poetry continually pushing the limits of Urban Contemporary art. His fearless experimentation and dedication to innovation have solidified his place as one of the most influential voices in modern lettering and visual culture.
Join us for this special opportunity to meet Niels Shoe Meulman, gain insight into his creative journey, and be the first to see his latest body of work.
