Seraphina Martin studied printmaking at the National Art School in Paris before moving to Sydney 40 years ago to teach printmaking at the Sydney University Art Workshop. She was the recipient of the Moya Dyring Studio residency at the Cite des Arts in Paris in 1988. There, she studied at the Atelier 17 under William Hayter. Since 1994 she has developed non toxic technology called Solar Plate etching. In 2005 she attended an artist in residence at the Canberra school of Art, Canberra.
She has taught printmaking at Meadowbank, Hornsby, and Penrith Tafe. She regularly teaches at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, Gymea and Megalo print Studio, Canberra. Seraphina now teaches at Willoughby Art Centre.
Most recently she travelled to India for a residency at the Government School of Art in Calcutta where she taught etching as well as Kola Bhavan University in Shantineketan, West Bengal. Seraphina has had many solo and group exhibitions of her work in Australia and overseas. Her work is represented in public and private collections in Australia.
SATURDAY a.m./p.m. : COLLAGRAPH PLATE MAKING
Seraphina will start with an introductory lecture on Collagraph printmaking followed by a display of print examples. Understanding how images are created using diverse textures onto a cardboard plate. Demonstration of impasto mediums application.
Drawings or photographs can be used as inspiration for your artwork. Develop your ideas by drawing onto cardboard with pencil and ink. Dark sections will then be cut away and peeled off, while built up areas will be created to produce a multilevel surface to be printed. Many exciting combinations will be open for investigation.
Up to 5 plates of assorted sizes will be created with different textural elements. Organza fabric will also be used as a base for working from dark to light, resulting in deep velvet like blacks. Textured papers and thread will be applied in conjunction with impasto medium as well to form your compositions. The plates will then need to be varnished front and back to seal the surface. Plates will be left overnight to harden ready to print.
SUNDAY a.m./p.m: PRINT COLLAGRAPH
Further images may be developed but this day will be devoted to printing your collagraph plates. Many different printing techniques will be applied. First impressions will be embossed without ink known as (blind printing) followed by printing the plates in relief,(with a roller). Intaglio techniques include A La Poupee colour combinations and stencils will be adopted to print your plates. Large rollers will be used to apply colour using the Viscosity method. Display of your prints at the end of the day.
MATERIALS PROVIDED:Includes:
5 assorted cardboard plates up to A4 size. Up to 12 sheets of Stonehenge printmaking paper to fit plates. Small kit of Assorted Textured papers as well as other textures of interest. Impasto PVA & varnish. Etching inks. Tarlatan wiping gauze and class notes.
All material and textures for plate making NOT TO EXEED 1.5mm THICK
General materials for students to bring :
• Bring assorted drawings/photographs, which can assist you in developing your images.
• Protective clothing, apron/dustcoat/old shirt.
• Small box of disposable rubber gloves from the supermarket
• Folder approximately (A3) size with tissue or butter paper to take home your finished prints (tissue can be purchased at studio).
• An assortment of tools such as scribes, scissors, scalpel knife, pens, pencil, cotton buds and masking tape.
• Printmaking paper if you want to print more than 12 prints. Stonehenge is adequate for this technique (Canson & Hahnemuhle paper is available for purchase at the studio).
• Lunch & morning/afternoon tea (tea, coffee and milk are provided).
• Your own cup and a face mask.
You will need to wear closed in shoes while working in the studio for work health safety reasons.
