About this Event
Join artist James Fowler for a hands-on Collage Button Workshop inspired by his large-scale button installation Formidable Fish, currently on view as part of the Art Gallery of Mississauga’s Fifth Annual Juried Show of Visual Arts.
In this creative session, participants will explore collage using maps, photos, and mixed materials to design and assemble their own wearable art. Each participant can make up to three unique buttons and is welcome to bring personal photos or materials to incorporate.
All collage and button-making supplies will be provided—just bring your imagination! Before the hands-on portion begins, the workshop will open with an introduction from artist James Fowler (@jamesfowlerart), who will share insights into his current work, Formidable Fish and the inspiration behind this large-scale button installation. James will also provide a brief look at the history of button-making through a queer lens—highlighting its role in self-expression, civil rights, identity, and activism. This context sets the stage for participants to explore the powerful storytelling potential of their own button creations.
Materials Provided:
- 2 completed buttons per person
- Collage materials, glue, scissors
