With an emphasis on exploring form, color, and composition, this collaborative workshop will begin with students creating a set of collages they will then use to inform and inspire a woodblock print. Students will learn and use various collage techniques to create visual relationships through ink drawing, torn paper, brushstrokes and layering. Through the collage making process, students will be encouraged to play, embracing the freedom to make, destroy, and allow uncertainty and flow in their artwork. Using the shapes and colors from their collage, students will then reinterpret the collage to create the layers for their mokuhanga print, the Japanese art of water-based woodblock printmaking. The workshop will cover the basics of the mokuhanga process including carving, registration, and printing. By layering, rotating, and even sharing blocks, students will experiment with this medium to make a new and unique print. The workshop will conclude with a casual sharing of completed works.
Level: Beginner/Intermediate, Ages 16+. Some printmaking experience is recommended but not required.
